📘 English Reflection:
A wartime photo I saw on Constitution Memorial Day stayed with me.
Even without deep political knowledge, we can still value peace and ask ourselves what we can quietly carry forward.
🕒 This blog takes about 3 to 4 minutes to read.
A smiling face in a wartime photo—
It wasn’t just a story from the past.
It felt like a quiet question for those of us living today.
May 3rd, 2025 – Constitution Memorial Day. A headline on Yahoo! News caught my eye.
"The Untold Smile, the Remembered Stern Look – Battleship Yamato and the Memories of War."
In 1945, during a suicide mission, the Battleship Yamato was sunk. Of its 3,332 crew members, 3,056 perished. In the photo were young men, smiling freely.

These young men were far younger than I am now in my 50s. Why did such promising lives have to be sacrificed?
That thought fills me with frustration and sorrow.
"The Japanese Constitution was made in a week." That might sound surprising.
In fact, GHQ's Civil Affairs Bureau drafted the proposal in just nine days in February 1946. Japan’s government revised and approved it, and the Constitution was enacted on May 3, 1947.
Our peace, freedom, and human rights were rooted in those early, rushed days.
Honestly, I’m not well-versed in politics or constitutional law. But whenever I hear the voices of those who died in war—or those who lived long after—I realize how precious my peaceful days with ramen and walks with Momiji are.

Today’s world is full of uncertainties—climate change, economic struggles, division.
But people in wartime must have lived in fear too, doing their best with what they had.
So maybe we too can live each day earnestly, doing what we can in our own way.
If someone asks me, "What can I do?" this is what I’d say:
Learn history. Value peace. Pass that spirit on to the next generation.
That might be the form of quiet compassion we can offer.

Today, the sky was clear. In the spring sunlight, Momiji napped peacefully.
What we must protect, I believe, is this very everyday life.
With that feeling, I wrote this post today.
